In Belize the term ‘mestizo’ makes particular reference to light-skinned Spanish speaking persons originally of a combined Mayan and Spanish descent. The first large Mestizo migration to Belize occurred in 1848 shortly after the Caste War broke out in Yucatan, Mexico in 1840 , and persisted as late as 1874. Thousands of refugees decided to settle permanently in the Northern and Western Belize , where they participated in the logwood and mahogany camps , and bled the Sapodilla tree for sap which was later exported and processed into ‘chicle’ ( original constituent of chewing gum). The great majority however, carried on agricultural activities notably the cultivation of sugar cane and maize (corn). |

Approximately one hundred years elapsed before a new wave of immigration began in 1979 . This time the Mestizos came from neighbouring Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras where they were fleeing death and persecution from dictatorial governments and widespread civil unrest. Today Mestizos constitute the majority of the population and their activities now span the full spectrum of Belizean economic life with a main emphasis on agriculture , commerce and the professions.

Mestizo food reflects both Spanish and Mayan cultural influences and form an integral part of the Belizean cultural identity. Names like tamales, garnaches, tacos, empanadas, bollos, chirmole, and relleno just to name a few, are well known in most households and comprise a major part of our ‘family of fast-foods’. Grounded in superstitions of the past, Mestizo traditional dances usually celebrate the feasts of Catholic patron saints. It is believed that by honoring the saints with prayers and food offerings during nine consecutive days (novena) culminating in a public procession , a Catholic mass and much eating , drinking , merrymaking and dancing , evil spirits and negative influences are cast out of the village homes , and health , prosperity and good fortune are invariably invoked. |
